Updated for 2026: Stress can contribute to temporary hair shedding, but “depression causes hair loss” is too simple. Hair loss, mental health, illness, medications and major life events can overlap in several ways.

Stress can trigger telogen effluvium

The American Academy of Dermatology notes that stressful life events can trigger telogen effluvium, a temporary increase in shedding. The visible shedding is often delayed because hair follicles move through the growth cycle before the hairs are released.

Hair loss can also affect mental health

The relationship can work in the other direction. Hair loss can affect confidence, body image and quality of life. That does not mean everyone with hair loss develops depression, and it does not mean depression is the cause whenever shedding occurs.

Medication changes can complicate the picture

Some medicines can contribute to hair loss or shedding. Do not stop a prescription medicine because you suspect it is affecting your hair. The AAD advises discussing that concern with the prescribing clinician because suddenly stopping treatment can cause other problems.

What to track

  • When shedding began
  • Major illness, surgery, fever or stressful events in the previous several months
  • Medication starts, stops or dose changes
  • Weight loss or major diet changes
  • Whether loss is diffuse, patterned or patchy
  • Scalp pain, scale, redness or other symptoms

When to get help

See a dermatologist for persistent, unexplained, patchy or rapidly progressive loss. If low mood, anxiety or distress is affecting daily life, discuss that with a qualified healthcare professional as well. Both concerns deserve attention.
