Updated for 2026: Hair often changes with age, but “I’m older, so this is normal” should not be the automatic explanation for every change. Female pattern hair loss, medication effects, nutrition, illness and scalp disease can all contribute.
What commonly changes with age?
Female pattern hair loss becomes more common with age and often begins with a widening center part or reduced density over the top of the scalp. Menopause may play a role, but hormones are not the only possible explanation.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends evaluation because other forms of hair loss can look similar.
One-sided thinning is not a classic aging pattern
Hair loss that is noticeably worse on one side, sharply patchy, painful or associated with scalp inflammation deserves a closer look. Friction, styling habits, alopecia areata, scarring disease and other causes may produce patterns that differ from typical female pattern loss.
Medication and nutrition questions belong in the history
Some medicines can contribute to hair loss, and inadequate protein, iron or other nutrients may also play a role. Do not stop medication or start high-dose supplements without discussing the issue with a qualified clinician.
Cosmetic options can help while the cause is being evaluated
Toppers and other non-surgical systems can add coverage to areas of thinning without waiting for regrowth. They can be especially useful when someone wants immediate styling flexibility or when the underlying loss is unlikely to fully reverse.
